I recently inherited a Browning A5 Sweet Sixteen and wanted to put a date on the gun since it was my great-grandfathers. The serial number is 39xxx with a "S" above it. I read online that S# 1-228,000 were between 1903-1939.

It is not a Sweet Sixteen,it is a American made A-5 made by Remington while Belgium was occupied by the Germans from 1940-1947,after that the production went back to Belgium.American guns can be identified by the serial number's. From about July 1953 the "S" designated the Sweet Sixteen and the "R" (Regular Weight) was designated from 1953 until it was discontionued in 1966.
