Phasewalk is just so, so useful - spend points in reducing cooldown, and restoring health when you are in phasewalk. Spend points in increasing your shield capacity, damage caused by weapons, accuracy etc. You can experiment. Once you have spent skill points, tried it out and not liked the result - just respec. I generally put like three different kinds of SMGs + a sniper when I'm Mercenary. Something for any situation. Hellfire. Regular & Balanced SMG. Double Anarchy. Sniper Rifle.
