This releases the key lock, and allows you to turn the "igniton" completely off, allowing the key to be removed. Once I did this, I took a q-tip, taped it to a pen (any thin instrument will do), greased up the end of the q-tip and greased the release mechanism. This initially happened a year and a half ago.

I am having a problem with not being able to remove my key from the ignition switch sometimes. It will be fine for a few days but then all of a sudden it will not release. So i pulled out the little 2.5cm/1in square panel in the boot/hatch panel, the bottom left corner when facing the hatch has a little gap and you can insert a screwdriver and lever it off. Then you push the little white plastic thing sticking out to the right and it should relase the hatch lock manually.
