Yellow mode is like dmc 1 when u die u waste an orb and repeat in the last checkpoint. Gold Mode is like dmc 2, u can revive instantly mid combat/ bossfight. So personally what I'd recommend is that you chose Gold for your first playthrough since it'll surely be a much more fun learning experience, and then once you get used to the game switch to Yellow if you want a challenge. But seriously, the missions aren't that long, so even having checkpoints is a pretty forgiving. Back in OG DMC3, you had to restart a room with yellow orbs. Gold orbs weren't a thing until DMC3SE. But you would also have full health after the orb, whereas this game resets you with whatever health you had.
