Lakes have a TON of settling room (there are “oceans” they are just lake-sized). I’m playing a small game in which I should’ve added another AI or two because it’s nearly turn 250 and there is a ton of good ground to still settle. I think seven seas kind of balances that.

Plus, if a city is one tile off of a body of water a three tile waterway can be made from coast to city to another coast or lake. Fractal or shuffle for a more exciting game, Continents with Islands for a more normal game, Mediterranean is the only preset map I like at all, it’s actually really fun. Play Pericles or Peter on a Pangea. That will give you a good baseline of how to handle higher difficulties with an easier road to victory. Also if you want an early war at emperor or higher, I would recommend focusing tech solely on your early war conquests. If you lower the sea level it can turn into a spindly pangaea, or if you raise it you get a less splintered archipelago.
