I don't think there's necesarily a 'best' path, but here are my favorites: Hero - Greatswords / Luminary. I am a huge fan of the Unbridled Blade attack which has gotten me through a lot of boss battles. Erik - Knives. I find them thematically appealing since he is a thief / cutpurse and the attacks that he gets for them are very impressive.

There's no real penalty for switching weapons during battle, so I'd recommend not worrying about what weapon type is "best." Rather, I'd recommend using them all and switching them around when appropriate. For instance, Boomerangs on Erik aren't very good for boss battles but they're great for groups of enemies.
