To me - all of Esme's subsequent actions make total sense. If the PCPD, Laura/Kevin couldn't find Nik, she went to "other" people she thought had resources to help her. She actually BEGGED Ava, who Esme knows hates her, to help her. Then she went to the person she thought was her last resort - Heather - for guidance on what to do next to find Ace.
