You can get gold ore from obsidian, it is a rare drop from it. Take the ore, cook it in the furnace, get the perk that lets you make coins, put the mold in the furnace.
Obsidian Tools? Where? They're not behind the boss @ the Well of Skelos... I checked. They are on the right behind the throne of the boss in the vulcano. There is a flat stone that will start to glow when approached, it will teach you. Thats where i learned the recipe anyways.
