About 4 months back I missunderstood the guy at the dealer and I put the wrong oil in the primary case. Shortly after that I started smelling burnt oil/electrical smell. I was worried but didn't know why until the stator finally burned up. After running ohms test on the voltage regulator and the stator it came down to the stator being bad.

L84-89 mainshafts have a tapper for the clutch basket and a keyway. 90-up had a splined shaft for the clutch basket. 80-86 had the "diamond" end cover and used a clutch arm. 87-up uses the clutch ramps.
